Sodium liquid ammonium polymer

Thiopolyurethanes (134) with sulfur in side chain ([ ] 0.1-0.3 dL/g) prepared by solution (benzene) polymerization of the diol (129) with diisocyanates (135), HDI (135a), MDI (135b), or 2,4-TDI (2,4-tolnene diisocyanate, 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, 2,4-diisocyanatotoluene, etc) [584-84-9] (135c), were used as the polymeric intermediates for the synthesis of these polymers. The benzyl groups were successfully removed from polymer (134a) with sodium in a mixed solvent of liquid ammonium and -propylamine [107-10-8], giving polymer (136). 

Watkinson [1988] lists some surfactants used for their dispersing action in organic liquids. He includes amongst them organic and metal sulphonates metal phenolates metal dialkyl dithiophosphates sodium dialkyl sulphosuccinates polyoxyethylene alkyl and alicyclic amines monethanol ammonium phosphate salts co-polymers of N-substituted formamide fatty acid phosphates... 

To a flask containing 2 liters of liquid ammonia cooled in a methanol-Dry Ice bath is dissolved 10 gm (0,07 mole) of / -chlorophenol-formaldehyde polymer. Then 6.0 gm sodium metal (0.26 gm atom) is added portionwise with stirring and a blue color forms. The reaction mixture is cooled and stirred for 24 hr, and the excess sodium is then destroyed by the cautious addition of ammonium chloride. The liquid ammonia is removed by evaporation in a hood, followed by addition of 150 ml of 10% aqueous... 

While our reaction was a solid-liquid-solid reaction, Hcylge s involved the use of concentrated aqueous sodium hydroxide and tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide. It is noteworthy that the final polymer (IV) is much more effective in its use as a polymer-supported protecting group for carbonyl compounds (Ref. 29) than a somewhat similar polymer-bound diol prepared under standard conditions (Ref. 30, 31).
