Nitrogen - the atomic number is 7 and the chemical symbol is N. The name derives from the Latin nitrum and Greek nitron for native soda and genes for forming because of nitrogen s presence in potassium nitrate (KNO3), so called salpeter or nitre or native soda. It was discovered by the Scottish physician and chemist Daniel Rutherford in 1772. [Pg.15]

Nitric acid also occurs in combination with potassa or soda, in the form of an efflorescence in the soil, especially in tropical climates, as in some ports of India and Pern. The compound formed with soda constitutes the nitre, and with potassa, the saltpetre of commerce. [Pg.593]

Preparation.—It is either from nitrate of potassa or nitrate of soda that this odd is always obtained for chemical purposes. When saltpetre is heated with sulphuric acid, it is decomposed an alkaline sulphate remains in the retort, whilst the more volatile nitrio acid distils over, and may he condensed in tho usual manner. In preparing nitric add on the small scale, equal weights of nitre and concentrated sulphuric add are placed in a glass retort, and carefully dis-... [Pg.594]

History.—The knowledge of sodium carbonate or soda is of great antiquity, as indicated by two references in the Bible.1 The word translated nitre in the Authorized Version means natron or soda, and is correctly rendered lye in Jer. ii. 22 in the Revised Version. No alteration has been made in the other reference. The confusion of terms evidently originated in the resemblance between the Greek vtrpov employed by Dioscorides and the Latin nitrum used by Pliny to denote sodium carbonate, and the word nitre, loosely employed in early English as synonymous with natron or soda, but now reserved for potassium nitrate. [Pg.81]

Both nitre and nitrate of soda are used as manures and it is still uncertain whether the acid of these salts contributes to the good effect, or whether they act by the bases alone. [Pg.228]
