I would like to propose a framework which focuses on the chemical engineer as a person and three related aspects of his life the job, the contribution to the society, and the responsibility to the physical world (Fig. 1). First, however, I shall highlight the important social, technological and economic factors affecting the life of the chemical engineer. 

They are more aware of social technologies than the first two generations. They are often found on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. They are pushing for companies to open up firewalls to enable access to social networks. This generation are the early adopters of mobile devices. They want access of systems beyond corporate firewalls, and they struggle to understand why the technologies that they work with are not easier to use. 

The most pervasive power shifts are driven by technology. The changes in media—the shift from advertising on national television to micro-marketing—has transferred power in the consumer supply chain from manufacturer to retailer. The use of social technologies has shifted power from the retailer to the shopper. Apple s invention... 

The use of social technologies to listen to consumer sentiment is an opportunity to rectify this situation. This information can be used in cross-functional launch meetings to be more effective. Dell, Newell Rubbermaid, and Whirlpool do this weekly. This could be an easy fix— placement, information, message—and quick sensing allows them to get it right before the product fails.

Another example of third-generation systems thinking is provided by the work of the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL) and its team members. A concept that we have found useful was adapted from an organizational model developed by French and BeU. The model s components consist of Goals, Structure, Human-Social, Technology, Task, and Environment (French BeU, 1984). The foUowing provides a description on how this concept can provide a framework for better JHA structure.
