Avoidant Personality Disorder (APD) and Social Anxiety Disorder. These illnesses share the tendency toward social withdrawal and isolation with the Cluster A disorders. There is, however, a critical difference that can help make the distinction. The patient with social anxiety disorder is greatly troubled by the fact that (s)he may have so few friends or feel uncomfortable around them. (S)he would, in general, much prefer to feel more at ease in a social setting. This differs from the Cluster A personality disorders. The patient with SPD is indifferent to the fact that (s)he has few friends in fact, (s)he prefers to not have any. The patient with STPD is in a somewhat more intermediate position, feeling very anxious around others and perhaps preferring to have more friends, but also finds it easy to withdraw into a life of isolated fantasy. 

An even better recipe for mate acquisition is one that appeared in a 2004 New York Times article He Aims He Shoots Yes " This particular recipe has been demonstrated to be essentially foolproof for men who want to attract women in social settings and, in particular, to coax even the most attractive women to go out on a date with the man. I realize that this recipe sounds a little contrived or demeaning, yet we can all be enthralled by its scientifically proven efficacy. The algorithm has three steps ... 

For a heavy drinker to make a major change in his drinking patterns requires a reconstruction of his way of life. The desire to smoke can also be brought on by reinforcing factors called external stimuli such as the sight, taste, and smell of tobacco smoke, as well as the social setting and rituals associated with smoking. These previously neutral stimuli in the environment, or certain events, can become associated with tobacco use and thus become triggers for a desire to smoke.

Problems with eccentricity can cause the only child to follow such an individual path, and develop such an individual identity, that the boy or girl feels socially set apart, unable to find many peers who can accept this degree of differentness, or who are similar enough to want to make a friendship.
