So state

The first study in which a full CASSCE treatment was used for the non-adiabatic dynamics of a polyatomic system was a study on a model of the retinal chromophore [86]. The cis-trans photoisomerization of retinal is the primary event in vision, but despite much study the mechanism for this process is still unclear. The minimal model for retinal is l-cis-CjH NHj, which had been studied in an earlier quantum chemisti7 study [230]. There, it had been established that a conical intersection exists between the Si and So states with the cis-trans defining torsion angle at approximately a = 80° (cis is at 0°). Two... [Pg.305]

No coloi additive oi product containing one can be used in the aiea of the eye, in surgical sutures, or in injections, unless so stated. Also, no colorant can be used to color foods for which standards of identity have been promulgated under Section 401 of the Federal Food, Dmg, and Cosmetic Act, unless the use of added color is authorized by the standard. Colorants without restrictions can be used for coloring foods generally, in amounts consistent with good manufacturing practice. [Pg.434]

A molecule in the S state can drop to some low vibrational level of the So state all at once by giving off the energy in the form of light. This process, which generally happens within 10 s, is called fluorescence. This pathway... [Pg.313]

The isomerization takes place because the excited states, both 5i and T, of many alkenes have a perpendicular instead of a planar geometry (p. 311), so cis-trans isomerism disappears upon excitation. When the excited molecule drops back to the So state, either isomer can be formed. A useful example is the photochemical conversion of c/s-cyclooctene to the much less stable trans isomer." Another interesting example of this isomerization involves azo crown ethers. The crown ether (5), in which the N=N bond is anti, preferentially binds NH4, Li, and Na, but the syn isomer preferentially binds and Rb (see p. 105). Thus, ions can be selectively put in or taken out of solution merely by turning a light source on or off." ... [Pg.320]

Finally, note that the competition between 1C and ISC is believed to be a general feature in the photochemistry of ketones RCOR [73], of which CH2O is the simplest member. There is evidence that pathway branching to the So state is... [Pg.256]

The experimental ratio of ds- to trans-cyclopropane 43 46, i.e. the stereo-specifity of the reaction cannot be considered as a simple indication of singlet or triplet percentage of RaC , since the stereochemistry of the cyclo-addition depends on many factors. Photolysis produces the exdted 5i-state of the diazoalkane 41. This compound can lose nitrogen and form the singlet carbene 42 (So-state). 42 can add directly in a stereospecific manner if ki is large. If, however, intersystem crossing 42 45 (Aisc is large) competes favorably with... [Pg.118]

Thus we may consider that ADF from So states takes place in a dimeric complex which dissociates after deactivation of the cooperatively excited Sg state. [Pg.123]

The following conclusion of the theory (1 ) is extremely important. The radiative transition 2 > Sq in a sandwich dimer is forbidden. In case of a dimer of 04 symmetry, the transition 2 (4Eg) > Sg (A g) is forbidden because of parity. There is no principle difference in the splitting nature of 2 and states for sandwich type dimers with lesser than D4h symmetry and the 2 > Sq transition remains quasi forbidden. This makes it possible to explain low P2 values obtained in (1 ) by a decrease of the 2 > Sg transition radiative probability, i.e., by decreasing or 2 > Sq fluorescence quantum yield in dimeric TTA complexes. In the case of non-sandwich dimer structures with location of subunits in one plane, the So state also is split into two states (high 202y and low 2B3g). However, two radiative transitions S2(B2y)... [Pg.124]

We propose that this may account for the duality of particle and wave. When a mass is observed, time has been stripped away, leaving a frozen 3-spatial snapshot, which we will see as (having been) a particle (simplest case). That occurs just after major (observable) photon emission from the masstime state. Immediately another observable photon is absorbed, and so state mt occurs. The particle of mass actually oscillates at a very high rate between the m and mt states—so high a rate that by arranging the interaction conditions one may interact with it either as a wave (react predominantly in the mt state) or as a corpuscle (react predominately in the m state). Mass as it exists is actually an oscillation or wave between m and mt states. Every differential piece of the mass is also in oscillation between (dm) and (dm)(dt) states. [Pg.656]

By H20/D20 exchange a deuterium modulation could also be detected in the So state by ESEEM spectroscopy449,470 indicating that substrate water might already be bound at the beginning of the water splitting cycle. [Pg.220]

The carbene l,3-di-l-adamantylimidazol-2-ylidene is additionally stabilized by aromaticity of the 5-membered ring and by steric protection by the neighboring adamantyl substituents. Similar carbenes with the adamantyl groups replaced by aryl groups are also stable [162]. An alkyl group may be regarded as a weak X -type substituent. The So state of dime thy lcarbene, (CH3)2C, is predicted to be only 5.9 kJ/mol lower than T by ab initio calculations [163]. [Pg.116]

As shown in Figure 1.10b, Z substituents will interact relatively weakly because of the larger energy separation than is found in Z-substituted carbenes. The interaction results in some stabilization but lowers the 2p-spn gap. Thus, the ground state for Z-substituted nitrenium ions is expected to be T. The triplet diradical will be strongly electrophilic. The So state with both electrons in the spn orbital would gain... [Pg.119]
