Smart glass

Window-glass has evolved through the centuries and is still changing today with the development of newer types of glasses, the latest of which is "self-cleaning" and "smart" glasses. All of these new developments are useful for their intended purposes, which may be room darkening, UV protection or thermal mediation or protection. However, from a scientific standpoint they are all different and will bias the obtained results. [Pg.126]

When you pour boiling water into a cold bottle and discover that the bottom drops out with a smart pop, you have re-invented the standard test for thermal shock resistance. Fracture caused by sudden changes in temperature is a problem with ceramics. But while some (like ordinary glass) will only take a temperature "shock" of 80°C before they break, others (like silicon nitride) will stand a sudden change of 500°C, and this is enough to fit them for use in environments as violent as an internal combustion engine. [Pg.182]

The sidecar has three ingredients—perfect ingredients. Cognac, Cointreau, freshly squeezed lemon juice—when you make it right, you get a 10, maybe a 12.Tasted, the sidecar s sweet-to-sour sway, and back again, has the smart, sublime balance of a Zen riddle, served in a sleek glass. [Pg.132]

Figure 33.1a illustrates the idea of the smart window. In this device a layer of electrochromic material and a layer of a transparent ion-conducting electrolyte are sandwiched between two optically transparent electrodes (OTEs). Indium-doped tin oxide on glass is used most commonly as the OTE. This material has very low... [Pg.621]
