SL state

The one-electron reduction of the Ni-C form results in the diamagnetic species Ni-R. From the redox titration studies of Lindahl s group, a plausible catalytic cycle can be postulated where the enzyme in the Ni-Sl state binds H2 (77) and becomes the two-electron more reduced Ni-R state. Sequential one-electron oxidations from Ni-R to Ni-C and then to Ni-Sl will close the cycle (Fig. 6). The various redox states differ not only in the extent of their reduction, but also in their protonation, as shown by the pH dependence of their redox potentials (87). This spectrum is dominated by fundamentals, combinations and overtones of totally symmetric vibrations. The intensity distributions among these bands are determined by the Franck Condon factors (vibrational overlap integrals) between the Sl state of the molecule and the ground state, D0, of the ion. (The ground state of the ion has one unpaired electron spin and is, therefore, a doublet state, D, and the lowest doublet state is labelled D0.) The... 

In the case of the Cr(CO)5 or Fe(CO)4 fragments a Jahn-Teller induced surface intersection between the Sj and S0 states explains the rapid transition to the S state following excitation of the parent. However for the Ni(CO)3 fragment the ground state is the 1A state and this has a planar structure (D3A). The first excited state Sj is the degenerate lE" state which splits by planar distortion producing 1Bl and A, states but not an Al state at the C2v limit. Consequently such a distortion does not provide a deactivation route to the S0 surface of Ni(CO)3. The Ni(CO)3 fragment remains in its Sl state which explains the luminescence observed in this system.

For spherical symmetry with spin-orbit included there are many more separate states to be considered. For f the number increases from 73 SL states to 198 SLJ states for f ds the numbers are 1166 and 3707. Table 15.4 shows the J distribution for these two configurations, with the selection rules for the spin-orbit coefficients. Because there are off-diagonal C matrix elements between adjacent S and L values, there is mixing between the states and S and L are no... 

In the sohd andflquid states, the principal allotropes are designated traditionally as SL, S]l, and Stt. Of these, only SX is stable in the soHd state. 

Together with pyridones, the tautomerism of pyrazolones has been studied most intensely and serves as a model for other work on tautomerism (76AHC(Sl)l). 1-Substituted pyrazolin-5-ones (78) can exist in three tautomeric forms, classically known as CH (78a), (DH (78b) and NH (78c). In the vapour phase the CH tautomer predominates and in the solid state there is a strongly H-bonded mixture of OH and HN tautomers (Section 4.04.1.3.1). However, most studies of the tautomerism of pyrazolones correspond to the determination of equilibrium constants in solution (see Figure 20). 

Of four possible tautomeric forms of indazolinone-3 109, evidence for the existence of solely the nonaromatic isomer 109b in the solid state has been obtained (Scheme 42) [76AHC(Sl),p. 352 96CHEC-II(3)1,96JCS(P2) 2263].

These asymptotic forms may be useful for conceptual studies, but the real design calculations must be based on the full Ergun equation. Turning to the case of compressible fluids, scaleup using geometric similarity with Sr = Sl = S is generally infeasible. Simply stated, the reactors are just too long and have too much inventory.

The steady states of such systems result from nonlinear hydrodynamic interactions with the gas flow field.
