Skin induration subcutaneous

Subcutaneous interferon alfa sometimes causes local erythema and skin induration, which can be prevented by regularly changing the site of injection. Isolated reports have described more severe local reactions, with inflammatory painful nodules, purpuric papules and vasculitis, local ulceration, and injection site necrosis (SED-13 1095) (SEDA-20, 330) (SEDA-21, 372) (SEDA-22, 402). Despite previous findings, even patients receiving low-dose interferon alfa can have severe injection site reactions. A localized intradermal bullous eruption, which recurred following each interferon alfa injection, was also reported (283). 

The reversibility of radiation fibrosis in skin and subcutaneous tissues in response to antioxidants is supported by regression of indnration reported in a French non-randomized pilot study involving intramuscnlar administration of bovine liposomal Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), 5 mg twice weekly for 3 weeks, to 34 patients with 42 distinct zones of superficial fibrosis. Softening of snbcutaneous induration was noted in 86% of fibrotic zones, with an actuarial response rate of 70% by 5 years. Complete regressions were noted in 7 of 42 (17%) of the fibrotic zones. Supportive data are reported with topical apphcations of SOD over a period of several months in 40 patients with fibrosis after postmastectomy radiotherapy for early breast cancer. These studies were not pursued after bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was recognized and bovine products withdrawn. 

Mild 2 Presence of at least two manifestations of inflammation (purulence or erythema, pain, tenderness, warmth or induration), but any cellulitis/erythema extends no more than 2 cm around the ulcer, and infection is limited to the skin or superficial subcutaneous tissues no other local complications or systemic illness... 

Subcutaneous administration can cause skin erythema and induration at the injection site (SEDA-16, 81). 

Tuberculin skin test An immunological test for tuberculosis in which a purified protein derivative from the Mycobacterium tuberculosis is injected subcutaneously, resulting in an induration if there was previous exposure to the bacterium. 

In 2001 the man, aged 68, received subcutaneous injection of a 3.75 mg 1-month leuprorelin acetate depot. At the sixth injection, a local skin reaction with erythema and induration was observed at the site of injection.
