The rate of any process is measured by its change per unit time. The speed of a car is measured by its change in position with time using units of miles per hour. The speed of a chemical reaction is usually measured by a change in the concentration of a reactant or product with time using units of molarity per second (M/s). The molarity of a chemical is represented in mathematical equations using brackets. [Pg.112]

The average reaction rate is the change in concentration either reactant or product per unit time during a time interval  [Pg.112]

Reaction rates are positive quantities. Product concentrations increase and reactant concentrations decrease with time, so a different formula is required depending on the identity of the component of interest  [Pg.112]
