In the absence of unsized control, k may be taken as 3% of the desized and dried sample. No correction is required for bleached and dyed cloth. For total size content the ash content (%) of the desized sample is to be added.

A quick method of determining size content is by extracting three times in a flask with cold MEK and drying with a UV lamp. 

The fiber tension is very important as this controls the resin pick-up, normally 35-40% volume fraction. Tensions are about lN/1000 filaments for wet winding and 3N/1000 filaments for other types of winding. If the tension is too high, the fiber does not spread and is damaged by abrasion in the guide and if too low, produces waviness in the applied fiber. The type of fiber size and size content must be carefully chosen to help achieve good resin wet out. The principal matrix materials are epoxy, polyester and vinylester resins, but thermoplastic prepregs such as PEEK can also be applied. 

A new E-glass roving gives fast wet-out with polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy, phenolic, urethane, and furan resin systems, due to low sizing content. Low loss on ignition means that there is not an excessive amount of sizing to be broken down by the styrene in the resin.
