Gas chromatography, depending on the stationary phase, can be either gas—Hquid chromatography (glc) or gas—soHd chromatography (gsc). The former is the most commonly used. Separation in a gas—Hquid chromatograph arises from differential partitioning of the sample s components between the stationary Hquid phase adsorbed on a porous soHd, and the gas phase. Separation in a gas—soHd chromatograph is the result of preferential adsorption on the soHd or exclusion of materials by size. [Pg.106]

Another form of liquid chromatography that can be used for separation of components in a solution is known as size exclusion chromatography. In this technique, the solid matrix, which has well defined pore sizes, is placed in a column through which the hquid sample is flowed. The size of the pores varies from matrix to matrix, and it is these pore sizes that are used to separate compounds. As the components travel down the column, their elution times are based upon their size. This technique typically works best for larger molecules such as biomolecules or polymers. [Pg.34]
