Size enlargement product shapes

Classification of size enlargement methods reveals two distinct categories (8,39). The first is forming-type processes in which the shape, dimensions, composition, and density of the individual larger pieces formed from finely divided materials are of importance. The second is those processes in which creation of a coarse granular material from fines is the objective, and the characteristics of the individual agglomerates are important only in their effect on the properties of the bulk granular product. [Pg.111]

The shape, dimensions, and size distribution of the agglomerated product are the most important parameters that also have a decisive influence on the selection of a suitable method. Desirable results of size enlargement may be, for example, free flowing, dust-free granular products with more or less strict requirements on the limits of size distribution, accurately shaped compacts with extreme demands on tolerance, or large, highly densified, and strong briquettes. Many other requirements are conceivable. [Pg.114]

Shape is often also an important characteristic. In many cases spherical products of size enlargement are desired. This approximate shape can be obtained with all growth agglomeration methods. On the other hand, unless extremely accurate feed control can be established in some tabletting machines, spherical products cannot be produced with pressure agglomeration equipment. The nearest approximation would be lens- or almond-shaped compacts. [Pg.115]
