There are practical applications of Features 2 and 3. Balloons inflated with helium rise in the atmosphere because the molar mass of helium is substantially lower than that of air. Consequently, the density of a helium-fdled balloon is less than the density of air, and the balloon rises, just as a cork released underwater rises to the surface. Hot-air balloons exploit Feature 3. When the air beneath a hot-air balloon is heated, its density decreases, becoming smaller than the density of the outside air. With sufficient heating, the balloon rises and floats over the landscape. In contrast, cold air is less dense than warm air, so cold air sinks. Logsdon River has been explored upstream from the confluence for more than seven kilometers. It more or less parallels the escarpment at the southern edge of the Mammoth Cave Plateau and is a master drain for the karst as far northeast as Roppel Cave. It is known to receive recharge from valley drains and vertical shafts and also from the sinking streams and sinkhole inputs on the Sinkhole Plain to the southeast. Avoid planting in frost pockets where late spring frosts may damage blossoms and early fall freezes may shorten the harvest season. The main environmental problems are due to the low quality peat. The drained peat is vulnerable to fires in the summer. Farmers are unable to control soil humidity in a way that enables raising crops on the one hand, but avoids soil decomposition on the other hand. Often, decomposed soil is removed by the wind or washed to the Lake of Galilee. As time passes, the valley is sinking, to a degree that has caused concern that the swamp will return. A large issue with this method is that thermal conduction between two planar surfaces is largely inefficient. On a microscopic level no surface is truly fiat it is a series of peaks and valleys as illustrated in Figure 1. When two surfaces are placed against each other, only a few high points on each surface actually make contact. For polished surfaces this amount of contact is estimated at 2-3% of the total surface area. Thus, the bulk of the material is transferring heat via conduction with air.
