Single-screw compounding is intrinsically very limited in both dispersive and distributive mixing. 

Limitation in single-screw compounding is the difficulty of powder conveying. 

Discharge from single-screw compounding is not homogeneous, so that defects and increases in cost occur. 

The second application of the CRD mixer was in the production of color concentrates (CC) on a single screw compounding extruder. The machine was a two-stage extruder and two CRD mixers were used at the end of the first and second stages. The CC quality was improved to the point that dispersing agents could be eliminated from the compounds run on this extruder. CRD mixers are used in single screw extrud-... 

The feed section of the ESK contains a twin-screw which feeds into a single-screw compounding section. Engineered for complete erational flexibility, the ESK is constructed on the building block principle. The screw and barrel sections are designed so that it is possible to vary the length of the machine. 

Single-Screw Compounding Machines The normal single-screw extruder is generally inadequate to homogenize PVC dry blend in a single pass but modified versions are used for this purpose. 

Process technology is also important, and this usually involves the use of twin screw extruders in addition to single screw extruders. While it is hard to beat the economics of single screw compounding, there are a number of compounds that require the additional dispersion that is best achieved in a twin screw extruder.
