Silver picrate

Silver Picrate (also called Pikratol in Ger). C H2(N02)3 0Ag mw 335.98 N 12.51% fine yel needles mp, 315° with decompn bp, expld ca 335°, or when brought in contact with an open flame was not ignited or detonated by the spit of a fuse when compressed in a detonator cap. Can be prepd by dissolving Ag oxide in a hot satd PA soln (Ref 3)... 

Although the transport of dry lead picrate is forbidden by the Department of Transportation (DOT) (49 CFR 172.101), the addition of water desensitizes it. No hazard classification is available from DOT for wetted lead picrate, but silver picrate, which is similar in sensitivity, may not be shipped when dry but is classified as a flammable solid (Hazard Class/Division 4.1) when it is wetted with water by at least 30 percent by mass.

Several silver compounds are extremely explosive—for example, silver picrate, silver nitride, silver peroxide, silver perchlorate, and silver permanganate. They are used in various types of explosives and as concussion caps for rifle and pistol ammunition.

Alkylation of polyhydric phenols such as resorcinol, hydroxyhydroquinone, orcinol, and pyrogallol with an alkyl iodide and alkali gives nuclear alkylation products as well as aryl ethers.760 In this reaction phioroglucinol gives hexa-methyl-l,3,5-cyclohexanetrione but there is a 65% yield of the 0-alkylation product 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene if the mixture is kept acid during the alkylation.761 Philbrook and Massey762 report the preparation of picryl ethers from silver picrate and alkyl halides.

Heterogeneous derivatizations, either in thepre- or postcolumn mode, using a reagent as a solid or bonded to packing particles have been explored by Krull and co-workers. Alkyl iodides and epoxides were converted to picryl ethers using silica supported silver picrate before HPLC separation. UV detectability at 220 nm was markedly improved with detection limits at the ppb level. Lower detectability was possible using either reductive or photolysis electrochemical detection.
