Silver peroxide

Silver in the +3 oxidation state, including silver peroxide, ie, black oxide, marketed as AgO, is obtained by the action of the vigorous oxidising agent S20 g on Ag20 or other Ag compounds. X-ray and neutron diffraction analyses show the nominal AgO unit cell to be Ag20 Ag202- Both Ag" and Ag " are present. Another compound of potentially important commercial value is Ag O, which has a unit cell of two Ag and two Ag ions. Its preparation is as follows ... [Pg.82]

A useful oxidizing reagent is silver(III) tristrifluoroacetate which can be generated from silver peroxide (AgO) and a tnfluoroacetic acid-tnfluoroacetic anhydride mixture [5f] This reagent readily oxidizes alicyclic and bicyclic hydro... [Pg.950]

Mixtures of silver peroxide with 1% of polyisobutene exploded on 3 separate occasions. Use of a halogenated polymer was safe. [Pg.23]

Quinone is produced in small yield by direct oxidation of benzene itself with silver peroxide, but better by the action of oxidising agents on a large number of its p-disubstitution products. Thus, in addition to quinol, p-aminophenol (experiment, p. 176), p-anisidine, p-toluidine, and sulphanilic acid as well as p-phenylenediamine and many of its derivatives yield quinone in this way. [Pg.310]

Several silver compounds are extremely explosive—for example, silver picrate, silver nitride, silver peroxide, silver perchlorate, and silver permanganate. They are used in various types of explosives and as concussion caps for rifle and pistol ammunition. [Pg.143]

The fuel cell type electrode consisting of a platinum anode and a silver peroxide cathode can be used for measuring hydrogen. [Pg.334]

Water Silver nitrate Barium chloride Peroxydisulfates, S2082- On boiling, decomposes into the sulfate, free sulfuric acid, and oxygen Black precipitate of silver peroxide On boiling or standing for some time, forms precipitate of barium sulfate... [Pg.533]

The main reaction is the stoichiometric one, AgO + CO —> Ag + CO2, although some catalytic action is also evident. The silver peroxide is supported on asbestos in the form of small cubes or cylinders prepared by extrusion. The preparation does not react with carbon dioxide to an appreciable extent and is much more stable than hopcalite in the presence of water vapor. Because of its relative stability to water vapor, it may be used in a gas mask canister without the incorporation of drying agents, such as are necessary in hopcalite canisters. [Pg.190]

Detection.—Many of the reactions described under the properties of ozone can be used for the detection of this gas in the air. Exposure to an ozone-laden atmosphere causes the formation of a film of oxide on the surface of a globule of clean mercury and so causes this to drag or tail when it moves.6 The formation of a stain of silver peroxide on a clean silver surface 7 supplies a very trustworthy test for ozone, but... [Pg.153]
