Three grams of each sample were placed in 40 mL Pyrex vials with silicone caps and then introduced inside the automatic sampling carousel of the electronic nose. After an equilibration time of 20 min at room temperature, the measurement sequence started with an incubation of 40°C for 10 min. Calibration of an arc or spark source is linear over three orders of magnitude, and detection limits are good, often within the region of a few micrograms per gram for elements such as vanadium, aluminum, silicon, and phosphorus. Five and twenty-three hundredths grams of germanium(IV) oxide (0.05 mol) is dissolved in 15 ml. of a concentrated aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid (47 %). A platinum evaporating dish or a polyethylene plastic beaker is used to keep silicon contamination to a minimum. A solution of 10.5 g. of barium chloride (0.05 mol) in 50 ml. of water is added. Barium hexafluorogermanate forms as a white, granular precipitate, which is filtered and washed free of chloride. Anhydrobisdibenzylsilicanediol is formed when 2 mols. of dibenzylsilicanediol condense with loss of 1 mol of water. Though the yield is not good, the best method of preparation is as follows Dibenzylsilicanediol (3 grams) is dissolved in 20 c.c. of dry ether, acetyl chloride (30 drops) added, and the solution in a beaker is kept in a desiccator over potassium hydroxide for three hours. It is then connected to the pump and evacuated to remove most of the acid chloride. After six hours, crystals of termolecular silicone usually appear on the surface. The solution is then poured into excess of cooled, dilute ammonium hydroxide and shaken. After extraction with ether and evaporation, the oily residue is treated with a little alcohol, which precipitates the silicone. Joliot explained why in 1935, when he and his wife accepted the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery The yield of these transmutations is very small, and the weights of elements formed. .. are less than 10 [grams], representing at most a few million atoms —too few to find by chemical reaction alone. But they could trace the radioactivity of the phosphorus with a Geiger counter. If it did indeed signal the artificial transmutation of some of the aluminum to phosphorus, they should be able to separate the two different elements chemically.
