To meet the challenges of new material requirements, scientists must strive constantly to develop new systems. One recent approach has been to prepare inorganic-organic hybrid materials by using the sol-gel method common to ceramists. This technique allows a considerable range of chemistry to be used and may lead to the development of a whole array of systems that have potential applications (structural, optical, etc.). This chapter provides an overview of the general status of this approach, with emphasis on the work that comes from our laboratory. The chemistry discussed in this chapter involves the use of silicon-containing species in the preparation of polymeric network systems.

This behavior is opposite to that observed for Eu(fod)3.2H20 adsorbed on Si—Ti [6] or silicon inorganic-organic hybrids. For those samples, the organic moiety was the group —(CH2)3—NH—(CH2)2NH2, and lifetimes of414, 384, and 380 Js were measured for the 1%, 5%, and 10% complex adsorbed samples, respectively. So, the experimental results obtained in this work, compared with those previously reported [7,8] provide evidence for the prominent role of the chemical composition of the siUca-modified surface in the spectroscopic properties of the adsorbed complex. 

Nanofillers have actually been around for decades (the oldest for over a century) carbon blacks, pigments, precipitated silicic acid (Ultrasil, Degussa-Hiils), pyrogenic silicic acids (Aerosile, Degussa-Hiils), phyllosilicates, nucleation agents, reactive silicone nanoparticles for epoxy resins, ceramic materials and inorganic-organic hybrid particles from sol-gel transformations, for example synthetic, dispersible aluminate (boehmite) powder. 

Our attempt to obtain a silicon-boron hybrid polymer system was successful. Their complicated crosslinkable structure acts as a thermosetting resin to give thermal and mechanical stability with good processability. Carborane hybridization gives exceptional non-flammability. This is a kind of organic-inorganic hybrid system that has plastic versatility and ceramic stability.
