Silicon directed metal oxidation

With the analysis embodied in Fig. 12, the formation of carbon fiber reinforced Si3N4 matrix materials by directed metal oxidation of molten silicon can also be described. To avoid fiber degradation during processing, the fiber should, ideally, be thermodynamically stable with respect to... [Pg.110]

A variety of CMC systems have been developed and fabricated in the past. These have included aluminum oxide, aluminum nitride and sihcon nitride matrix composites [3-5]. The reinforcement has predominantly consisted of silicon carbide based fibers. Oxide based fibers have also been evaluated over the years as and when they have become available. This chapter reviews the development effort of silicon carbide reinforced aluminum oxide matrix composites fabricated via directed metal oxidation and compares them with those reinforced with oxide fibers. [Pg.278]

Carbide cluster ions (MC + - M = matrix element) have been measured by investigating them directly from the solid carbides (B4C,46 SiC) or by analyzing metal oxide/graphite mixtures (for M = rare earth element,3 Si,46 Th or U36). Figure 9.60 shows the distribution of silicon carbide cluster ions (SiC +) in laser ionization mass spectrometry by the direct analysis of compact SiC in comparison to the carbide cluster ion distribution of LaC + and SrC + in spark source mass spectrometry, by investigating a metal oxide/graphite mixture. [Pg.448]

There is much interest in the application of PVDF in medical imaging because of its close acoustic impedance match with both tissues. Monolithic silicon-PVDF devices have been produced in which a sheet of PVDF is bonded to a silicon wafer containing an array of metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) amplifiers arranged in such a way that when an acoustic wave is detected, the electrical signal resulting from the piezoelectric action in the PVDF appears directly on the gate of an MOS transistor. The device is therefore known as a piezoelectric oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (POSFET). [Pg.594]

Binary compounds can be made with uranium. Such solids state compounds have been investigated because they have interesting magnetic properties. They are made by direct interaction with uranium metal. Oxides mainly form with the general formula UO2, UjOg, UO2. The metal also reacts with other elements such as boron, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and arsenic to make semi-metallic solids. Compounds can also be made using silicon, sulfur, selenium, and tellurium. Urinates can be formed by the addition of uranium with alkali and alkaline Earth metals. [Pg.230]
