Silica-silicate-based porous materials

Similar silica-montmorillonite nanoarchitectures have also been prepared by sol-gel, as reported by Qian et al., using TEOS and another type of clay (from Zhangjiakou, China), corroborating the usefulness of this methodology in the development of silica-silicate-based porous materials [58]. 

Because of their biocompatibility, chemical stability, high thermal and electrical conductivity, sorption ability, tuneable surfaces area, pore-size distribution and straightforward functionalization chemistry, porous carbons have found application in diverse topical areas such as sensors, fuel cells, hydrogen storage, and sorption.39 11 One particular property that distinguishes porous carbon from porous silica materials is the electrical conductivity of the former that has no counterpart in siliceous-based scaffoldings. In addition to utilization of monoliths as a column material, two reports describing respectively silicate and synthetic organic polymer based monolithic frits were published recently [85,86], The conventional method of frit fabrication for a particle packed column usually involves thermal sintering of a section of the packing material, such as bare or octadecyl silica, using a heating device. This approach has several weaknesses such as the lack of control of the temperature and porous properties of the frit that decreases reproducibly of the fabrication process.
