GKN Aerospace also has received a contract from Sikorsky Aircraft Co., USA to develop and manufacture side skin panels for the RAH-66 Comanche military helicopter. The contract initially calls for 42 cored RP test panels for material qualification and three actual 3-ft by 4-ft forward side panels. Sikorsky has the option to extend the contract to include 73 actual production panel sets, for a total value of 1.5 million.

Since the helicopter emerged as a m or military component during the Vietnam War, Bell Helicopter has been the prime provider to the Army and Air Force. The UH-1, probably the most famous example, is being phased out by the UH-60 Black Hawk from Sikorsky Aircraft. These are the Army s personnel and cargo workhorses.

Igor Sikorsky is most often associated with the development of the helicopter and is called the father of the modern helicopter. Sikorsky s VS-300, the first operational helicopter, made its first free flight in 1940. It introduced the practical use of the tail rotor to the helicopter airframe. Its purpose was to counteract the action of torque on the body of the aircraft and keep it from spinning wildly out of control in the opposite direction of the blades overhead. 

The Boeing GH-47 Chinook, a medium-lift helicopter, is the largest-capacity aircraft used by the Army and Air Force for personnel and cargo transport. The Sikorsky GH-54 Sky Crane was the only heavy-lift helicopter in the inventory but was phased out at the end of the Vietnam War because it was too unwieldy. Variants of the Sky Crane are still used in the construction and logging industries.
