Side cleaning

Process-side cleaning. Either chemical or mechanical cleaning on the inside of the tubes can readily be accomplished. 

The essential tasks of the sensor housing are to hold the sensing element in place and to protect it against mechanical impacts or aggressive chemicals. Furthermore, it provides the electrical connection and keeps the reference side clean and separated from the exhaust side. Thimble and planar designs naturally differ from each other because of the tubular or rectangular geometry of the ceramic elements and the fact that the planar element typically includes a heater while the thimble heater is a separate part (Fig. 17.15.11). 

First, cut a thin-film sample into a strip of thickness 0.8 mm with a diamond cutter. Mechanically grind the sample down to less than 100 pm only from one side. Clean the sample with acetone and put the ground sample on a piece of glass, the ground surface facing the glass as shown in Fig. 4.15(a). Fire-Side Maintenance. Periodic inspection and fire-side cleaning should be performed when the exit fuel gas temperature is more than 100 to 175°F (55 to 97°C) above normal operating temperature. Cleaning should be performed immediately upon shutdown. The boiler manufacturer s recommended procedures for all fire-side maintenance should be followed. 

Water-Side Cleaning. Chemical or acid cleaning is the quickest and most satisfactory method for the removal of water-side deposits. It is, however, extremely important to use a procedure of known reliability under careful control. 

Gas-Side Cleaning. When ash deposits contain an appreciable amount of sulfur, they should be removed prior to any extended outage, since these deposits can absorb ambient moisture to form sulfuric acid that will corrode furnace pressure parts. 

The philosophy governing the FPU layout is as follows. The starboard side ( clean side ) facing the coast has been equipped with facilities for coupling to a floating dock, providing continuous plant communication and high-voltage terminals for electric power transmission to the coast. 

Special techniques are required for tube-side cleaning, but cleaning the tube side is not any more difficult than cleaning conventional tubes. 

Special care should be taken on acceptance of a new twisted tube bundle to verify that the tubes are lined up correctly and that all shell-side cleaning lanes are unobstructed.
