Si-Al-O-N Oxynitrides

Siaions consist of three-dimensional arrays of (Si—Al) (O.N)4 tetrahe-dra. These oxynitrides are traditionally fabricated with silicon nitride An example is beta-sialon, where the O and Si are partially replaced by N and Al, respectively. Advanced sialons are now being researched to enhance fracture toughness and iinpioved cieep properties,... [Pg.70]

Many studies of crystallisation of oxynitride glasses have concentrated on the Y-Si-Al-O-N system. Thompson (1989) outlined the various crystalline phases that exist in this system as shown in the Janecke prism in Fig. 21.2. [Pg.563]

Loehman reported on the formation of oxynitride glasses in the system Y-Si-Al-O-N. The silica-rich glasses contained up to 7% nitrogen. The changes in thermal expansion coefficient and the glass transition temperature are tabulated below. [Pg.300]

NMR spectroscopy. The effect of Si3N4 and AIN on the fabrication of lithium-aluminosilicate oxynitride glass ceramics has been investigated using NMR spectroscopy. The thermal oxidation of P-sialon powders has been followed using Al and Si MAS NMR spectroscopy. a-Sialon ceramics synthesized from a clay precursor have been characterized using MAS NMR spectroscopy. Al and Si NMR spectra have been reported for Si-Al-O-N glasses. [Pg.135]

Later, it was realized that oxynitride glasses, which revealed themselves to be more resistant to high temperatures than the corresponding non-nitrided glasses, were of interest in their own right. Various systems, in particular the Y-Si-Al-O-N quinary system, were extensively investigated with the preparation and study of properties of a wide variety of bulk glass compositions. [Pg.77]

Y-Si-Al-O-N glasses have been studied or reviewed in many other papers dealing with oxynitride glasses (Loehman 1983, 1985, Messier 1985, 1987, Hampshire et al. 1985, Lang 1986, Sakka 1986, 1995, Rouxel et al. 1992, 1994, Murakami and Yamamoto 1994, E.Y. Sun et al. 1996). [Pg.79]

Y-Si-Al-O-N glasses, as many other oxynitride glasses, have often a grey color and poor optical quality. [Pg.80]
