Why should contact between shrunken cells be damaging One possibility is that the contacts induce damaging membrane-membrane fusion, for close contact between shnmken cells has been found to induce membrane fusion above 0 °C. Moreover, freezing has been shown to induce fusion in model membranes (Anchor-doguy et al., 1987) and to produce changes in fungal hyphae that are symptomatic of fusion (Fujikawa and Miura, 1986). [Pg.374]

Franklin mentioned Pliny s account of fisherman pouring oil on troubled waters in ancient times, a practice that survives to the present. (Franklin s experiment was reenacted by the author at the pond on Clapham Common with a teaspoon of olive oil. The spreading oil covered a surface not larger than that of a beach towel-it appears that technique and/or choice of oil is important. The olive oil quickly spread out in circular patterns of brilliant prismatic colors, but then dissolved from sight. Indeed, the pond itself has shrunken considerably over the intervening 230 years.)... [Pg.119]

But there were witnesses who did not take the oath. They didn t have to. Their testimony ran between the lines of Buetefisch s reports from the site. Pale and shrunken, Buetefisch blinked nervously as Minskoff strolled over to the witness box. [Pg.171]

In 1968, Meryman [ 1.20] presented his idea about the minimum cell volume and hypothesized, that during feezing cell are damaged in two steps. Initially water diffuses from the cell to the surrounding, the freezing solution concentrating the solution in the cell. However only a certain amount of water can be withdrawn from the cell until it has shrunken so much, (minimum cell volume), that any further withdrawal takes water from the mem-... [Pg.27]

Based on the solution property of poly (DMAEMA-co-AAm) in response to temperature, the temperature dependence of equilibrium swelling of poly (DMAEMA-c6>-AAm) gel as a function of chemical composition was observed as shown in Figure 6. The transition temperature of copolymer gel between the shrunken and swollen state was shifted to the lower temperature with increases in AAm content in the gel network. This is attributed to the hydrogen bond in the copolymer gel network and its hydrophobic contribution to the LCST Copolymer II gel was selected as a model polymer network for permeation study because it showed the sharp swelling transition around 34°C. [Pg.60]

Cleaned membranes that were dried at 80 °C were referred to as the N (normal) form, and those dried at 105 °C, as the S (shrunken) form. Membranes prepared by preboiling were referred to as the E , or expanded, form. These symbols are mentioned here because they were used in other reports to refer to membranes prepared under similar respective conditions. [Pg.321]

Prior to being banned in 1976, PCB-1254 was used in home appliances including air conditioners, furnaces, washers, and driers. May have been added to automotive transmission oils to swell shrunken transmission seals in place (Monsanto, 1960). [Pg.902]

Malnourished children can have two very different appearances. In marasmus, the limbs are wasted and the whole of the body assumes a shrunken skin and bone appearance, as muscle is sacrificed to support more vital tissues. The shranken cheeks are caused by a loss of the Bidet fat depots, hi kwashiorkor, children have pot-bellies partially explained by generalised oedema and hepatomegaly. Both have brittle, bleached hair, skin lesions and a deeply apathetic demeanour. Although the two conditions intergrade they show some geographical separation with kwashiorkor being restricted to tropical and subtropical regions while marasmus can occur anywhere. [Pg.357]

The Rh dimer after H2 adsorption exhibited similar EXAFS oscillation and Fourier transform to those for the fresh imprinted catalyst Detailed analysis of the EXAFS data confirmed retention of the local conformation of the Rh dimer with a Rh-Rh bond (CN = 1.3 0.4), two Rh-O bonds (CN = 1.7 0.5) and a Rh-P bond (CN = 1.2 0.2). No formation of Rh metallic particles was observed. However the Rh-Rh bond contracted from 0.268 0.001 to 0.265 0.001 nm with the hydride dimer, indicating stabilizahon of the dimer structure by electronic rearrangement due to monohydride coordination on both Rh atoms in the dimer. After reaction of the Rh-dimer hydride species with 3-methyl-2-pentene, the shrunken Rh-Rh bond of the monohydride species expanded again to recover the... [Pg.398]
