Shrinkage cracks

The most common problem in the paint layers, which can have a wide variety of causes, is loss of adhesion. Upon drying of the medium, the paint layers develop shrinkage cracks. In itself, this is not a particularly worrisome phenomenon, but, if through any cause the adhesion between paint layers and ground or between ground and support is lost, the paint begins to flake. First the flakes cud up, and finally become completely detached and lost. 

Expansire cements are hydrauHc cements designed to expand rather than shrink on curing, as do standard Pordand cements. They are defined in ASTM C845 and are used to control and reduce shrinkage cracks in large poured-in place stmctures. 

When concrete hardens, the cement paste shrinks. The gravei, of course, is rigid, so that smaii shrinkage cracks are created. It is found that air entrainment (mixing small bubbles of air into the concrete before pouring) helps prevent the cracks spreading.

It is also possible to reface and even take out variations in concrete and masonry surfaces and bridge shrinkage cracks. Such coatings find application on walls, buildings, roofs, water tanks, reservoirs and so on.
