Shell operational problems

The thermal design and some aspects of the mechanical design of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger are empirically based, as discussed above. However, there are many criteria for mechanical selection [5], many experience-based criteria that can avoid or minimize operating problems [155], and other design considerations such as identification of thermodynamic irreversibilities [15, 110], thermoeconomic considerations [111], system optimization, and process integration [112], In industrial applications, thermoeconomic optimization should be... [Pg.1353]

Finding (Pueblo) GA-7. Corrosion remains a serious operating problem with the GATS supercritical water oxidation system. Failure to shut down in time to replace a perforated reactor liner could result in rapid corrosion of the high-pressure reactor shell. [Pg.67]

The application of draft tubes as related to various mixing operations is showm in Figures 5-231 and 5-24A-5-241. The draft tubes are basically a tube or shell around the shaft of the mixer including the usual axial impeller, which allows a special or top-to-bottom fixed flow pattern to be set up in the fluid system. The size and location of the tube are related to both the mechanical and mixing performance characteristics as well as peculiar problems of the system. Usually they are used to ensure a mixing flow pattern that cannot or w ill not develop in the system. Weber gives the followdng points for draft tubes [23] ... [Pg.309]

Adequate space must be left around all equipment so that it can be easily serviced and operated. For instance, a floating head heat exchanger must have enough clear space so that the tube bundle can be removed from the shell and taken elsewhere for repairs. One company had problems with a heat exchanger during startup. They tried to remove the tube bundle, but found that they had not allowed adequate space and had to knock an opening in a brick wall. They replaced the wall with a door so that they would not need to remove any more walls when they needed to service it again. [Pg.147]

The previous argument is valid for all observables, each represented by a characteristic operator X with experimental uncertainty AX. The problem is to identify an elementary cell within the energy shell, to be consistent with the macroscopic operators. This cell would constitute a linear sub-space over the Hilbert space in which all operators commute with the Hamiltonian. In principle each operator may be diagonalized by unitary transformation and only those elements within a narrow range along the diagonal that represents the minimum uncertainties would differ perceptibly from zero. [Pg.464]
