The conventional leaded premium gasoline is characterized by minimum RON and MON values of 97 and 86, respectively. In 1993, it was the principal product in the gasoline pool in France having 60% of the sales, but its share is diminishing and, in 2000, it will play mostly a minor role.

Product innovation absorbs considerable resources in the fine chemicals industry, in part because of the shorter life cycles of fine chemicals as compared to commodities. Consequently, research and development (R D) plays an important role. The main task of R D in fine chemicals is scaling-up lab processes, as described, eg, in the ORAC data bank or as provided by the customers, so that the processes can be transferred to pilot plants (see Pilot PLANTS AND microplants) and subsequently to industrial-scale production. Thus the R D department of a fine chemicals manufacturer typically is divided into a laboratory or process research section and a development section, the latter absorbing the Hon s share of the R D budget, which typically accounts for 5 to 10% of sales. Support functions include the analytical services, engineering, maintenance, and Hbrary. 

The most commercially successful of these systems has been the Convex series of computers. Ironically, these are traditional vector machines, with one to four processors and shared memory. Their Craylike characteristics were always a strong selling point. Interestingly, SCS, which marketed a minisupercomputer that was fully binary compatible with Cray, went out of business. Marketing appears to have played as much a role here as the inherent merits of the underlying architecture. 

Once a toller has been selected and any required preliminary confidentiality protection is in place, the client typically shares more detailed information. The toller can then make an informed decision about the economic, technical, and safety aspects involved in bidding the work. If the two parties decide the project will be mutually beneficial, agreements and obligations are negotiated and then formalized in a written contract. Both parties—the client and the toller—have roles in fulfilling the contract and in carrying out their responsibilities to the workers and the public. The purpose of the written contract is to clarify and document those roles and responsibilities to effectively execute, maintain and eventually terminate the project. 

Like Bruce, I am here to share the perspective of the field. Shortcut equipment design methods play a major role in process equipment installations. Virtually all process designs employ these methods and shortcut techniques are developed from many sources.
