Shared Surface Street Design

Guide Dogs for the Blind Association Shared Surface Street Design Research Prefect, 2006... [Pg.85]

A number of local authorities in the UK are looking to improve the quality of their pubhc realm spaces by changing the environment in their roads and streets. There are a wide variety of schemes already implemented and in the process of consultation and design. Many of the schemes are innovative in nature, and some involve the concepts of shared space and shared surfaces . The schemes affecting roads and streets are routinely subject to Road Safety Audits. [Pg.163]

The Department for Transport s Local Transport Note on shared space (DfT, 2011) defines shared space as A street or place designed to improve pedestrian movement and comfort by reducing the dominance of motor vehicles and enabling all users to share the space rather than follow the clearly defined rules implied by more conventional designs. Many of these shared-space schemes include an element of shared surface (or level surface) where kerbs are removed so that there is no level difference to segregate pedestrians from motor traffic. [Pg.163]
