Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals (PDLCs) are widely researched materials of commercial importance in the electro-optical device industry as their light transmission can be changed by the application of an electric field. The refractive index of these rod-shaped liquid crystals along and perpendicular to their major axis is... 

For example, p-azoxyanisole (see Table 1) is a typical LC compound with a nearly linear stmcture. From a steric point of view, this is a rigid rod of length 20 A. The two benzoate tings are nearly coplanar. The majority of rod-shaped or board (lath)-shaped liquid crystals have one, two, and even three benzene tings chemically linked directly to each other or via linking units, such as —CH=CH—, —CH=N—, —NH—CO—, and —COO—, placed in the core stmcture.

Although more than 60 years ago Vorlander had already reported the synthesis of bent-shaped liquid crystals, ° they did not attract much interest until Mat-sunaga et al. synthesized new mesogenic compoimds with "banana-shaped" molecular stmctures. Only recently it was realized that not only rod-shape (calamitic) or discotic molecules can form liquid crystals, but bent-core (bowlike or banana-shape) molecules can, too. ...
