Face lubricated-type seals must be connected from the source of lubrication to the tap openings in the seal gland before startup. This is another predetermined environmental control feature that is mandatory for proper seal function. Where double seals are to be operated, it is necessary that the lubrication feed lines be connected to the proper ports for both circulatory or dead-end systems before equipment startup. This is very important because all types of double seals depend on the controlled pressure and flow of the sealing fluid to function properly. Even before the shaft is rotated, the sealing liquid pressure must exceed the product pressure opposing the seal. Be sure a vapor trap does not prevent the lubricant from reaching the seal face promptly. [Pg.953]

Equipment seals on rotating shafts such as agitators, pumps, and compressors should avoid contact with products. Otherwise, seal lubricants should be food grade where permitted by the manufacturer. [Pg.35]

As a result of that operation, uncontrollable accumulation of significant masses of lead oxides in the primary circuit h pened, they could have formed when the pipelines of the primary circuit gas system, which were necessary for its repair, were depressurized, and thus the air penetrated into the primary circuit. Besides that, the primary circuit was contaminated by products of oil pyrolysis, which was the working medium for seals of rotational shafts of pumps that provided the gas leak prooihess of the primary circuit. Masses of oil were spilled into the primary circuit because the oil seals had not been reliable enough. [Pg.129]

Sometimes one type of performance must be sacrificed to another. An example of this type of phenomenon might be a shaft seal in place on a product. Its shelf life would be the length of time the product could remain unused and still have the seal fimction properly when used. Its static life would be the length of time it would be able to fimction after it had been first used. Finally, its functional life would be the period of time or number of rotations the seal could withstand while the shaft was rotating. Bear in mind that the temperatures would rise when the shaft was turning and abrasion would also be taking place. It is, therefore, quite likely that the ideal polymer for one circumstance might be less favorable for another. Decisions must often be made. [Pg.613]
