Phthalates are suspected of acting as endocrine disrupters also in humans, affecting male and female reproductive tract development. Exposure to PAEs in adult men has been associated with semen quality and alterations in sexual behavior [104], and with endometriosis and intrauterine inflammation (which is a risk factor for prematurity) in adult women [105, 106], as well as other effects. These studies suggest that DEHP may play a role in inducing the intrauterine inflammatory process. Besides the reproductive effects of PAEs, recent studies have also shown the genotoxicity of DEHP, DBP, and DiBP in human lymphocytes and mucosal cells [107,108]. 

Gestation is the period during which each individual s sexuality is first expressed and shaped. But impact on the organization of fetal sexuality seems to be most effective during certain sensitive gestational periods, windows of vulnerability. The exact periods for human behavioral effects of sex hormones remain unknown. The period 8—24 weeks of gestation may be most critical because that s when testosterone secretion surges in male fetuses, but there may be multiple sensitive... 

More recently it was foundthat also androsta-4,16-dien-3-one, a metabolite of testosterone as well, has strong pheromone-like activities in humans. It affects significantly the mood of heterosexual women andhomosexual men, but it does not alter behavior overtly, although it may have more subtle effects on attention.
