Sewage sludge chemical hazards

Because PCDD/Fs became to be recognized as the most hazardous for the environment and human beings, very restricted emission limits were introduced in the most countries. But only a few countries limits are also pursuit for PCDD/F levels in sewage sludge, however sludge is one of the ultimate sinks for persistent chemicals. [Pg.210]

United States because they build up in the environment and can cause harmful health effects, they are still in use in many other countries. Polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (dioxins) (Fu et ah, 2003) consist of 210 different compounds that have similar chemical properties (Bhandari and Xia, 2005). This class of compounds is persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative. They are generated as by-products during incomplete combustion of chlorine containing wastes such as municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, and hospital and hazardous wastes (Bhandari and Xia, 2005). PCBs were widely used in the past and now contaminate many industrial and natural areas. [Pg.232]

The criterion for permit-required confined space is that it contains or has a known potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere, including chemicals, sludge, or sewage. Hazardous atmosphere means an atmosphere that may expose employees to the risk of death, incapacitation, impairment of ability to self-rescue (escape unaided), injury, or acute illness. Examples of hazardous atmospheres are a flammable gas or vapor, airborne combustible dust at a concentration that meets or exceeds its LEL, unacceptable oxygen levels, or any atmospheric condition recognized as immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). [Pg.223]
