Settling ability

The more finely the liquids are dispersed within one another, the more slowly will they settle, either in a separate decanter for a continuous operation or in the same vessel for a batch process. Most stable emulsions, those which settle and coalesce only very slowly if at all, are characterized by maximum particle diameters of the dispersed phase of the order of 1 to 1.5 microns. Presumably one could estimate through Eq. (6) what agitator speeds would produce such droplet sizes, but such calculations are not likely to yield completely useful results. For example, it has been observed on several occasions that the settling ability of some liquid dispersions passes through a minimum as agitator speed is increased. 

The majority of spray dryers in commercial use employ cocurrent flow of gas and solids. Countercurrent-flow diyers are used primarily for diying soaps and detergents. Soil does not provide as solid a base as rock. The strength of a foundation built on soil and its ability to withstand an earthquake will therefore depend upon the quality and depth of soils which may be formed of a number of soil layers of different stratifications and depths. Sandy soil or soil with sedimentary deposits, for instance, will have less strength and will provide a weaker base, as such soils may settle more during a ground movement. 

The ratio shows the ability to settle short-term liabilities and should not normally be lower than 1 1, though it very often is The lower the ratio, the greater indication of possible financial strain. 

Even where these organic polymer materials are employed, their ability to disperse sludge and transport hardness salts may be constrained by limited BD and other factors. Some sludge still develops. The fact remains that boilers simply are not designed to be settling and clarifying vessels. 

Pharmaceutical scientists have developed improved suspension dosage forms to overcome problems of poor physical stability and patient-perceived discomfort attributed to some active ingredients. An important development aspect of any suspension is the ability to resuspend easily any settled particles prior to instillation in the eye and ensure that a uniform dose is delivered. It would be ideal to formulate a suspension that does not settle since the patient may not always follow the labeled instructions to shake well before using. However, this is usually not feasible or desirable since the viscosity required to retard settling of the insoluble particles completely would likely be excessive for a liquid eyedrop. The opposite extreme, of allowing complete settling between doses, usually leads to a dense layer of agglomerated particles that are difficult to resuspend.

As a river or stream slows, it loses some of its ability to keep solids in suspension, and they begin to settle out. This process is referred to as sedimentation or siltation. A distinction is sometimes made between these two terms depending on the size of particles deposited, hut they are often used interchangeably. 

An advantage of the CURE process is the ability to achieve high contaminant removal rates. Also, floe, a by-product of the CURE process, tends to be stable and settle rapidly. Electrocoagulation will not remove metals that do not form precipitates. In addition, electrocoagulation will not remove nonreactive, soluble organic compounds nor desalinate water.
