Sesquioxides properties

The chemical properties of berkehum are rare earth-like character because of its half-filled 5/ subsheU and should be simdar to cerium. The element readily oxidizes to berkelium dioxide, Bk02 when heated to elevated temperatures (500°C). In aqueous solutions, the most common oxidation state is -i-3 which may undergo further oxidation to +4 state. A few compounds have been synthesized, the structures of which have been determined by x-ray diffraction methods. These include the dioxide, Bk02 sesquioxide, Bk203 fluoride,... [Pg.96]

G. Canneri found that the treatment of a suspension of thallium sesquioxide in water with liquid nitrous anhydride, and subsequent evaporation of the soln., even in the cold under reduced press., yields, not thallic nitrite, but thallous nitrate. The latter is also obtained when soln. of thallic sulphate and barium nitrite are mixed in the cold, and the resulting liquid evaporated at low temp. That thallic nitrite is capable of existence in soln., although it cannot be obtained in the solid condition, is shown by the analyses and properties of the soln. The treatment of an aq. soln. of thallic nitrite with alcohol yields a precipitate of the sequioxide. In ethereal soln., thallic nitrite is far more stable, and the salt separates in the solid state on evaporation of the solvent it could not, however, be analyzed directly. Decomposition of thallic nitrite, with formation of thallous nitrate, takes place solely in accordance with the equation T1 (N02)3->TlN03+N2Os, neither intermediate reduction products nor thallous-thallic complex compounds being formed. [Pg.496]

Another class of compounds that has attracted much interest are the sesquioxides and sesquichalcogenides of the type (RE)2nY3 [(M2Y3) ] (E = Si, Ge, Sn Y = O, S, Se), due to their unique structural properties. These molecules have polyhedral cage-like structures analogous to those of bicyclo[l.l.l]pentane (n = 1) (1), adamantane (n = 2)... [Pg.1896]

What is true as regards the base- or acid-forming properties of the oxides higher than the sesquioxides, e.g., of Cr03, Mn03, Mn207 ... [Pg.350]

The structure of platinum dioxide and its reactions with some di, tri, and tetravalent metal oxides have been investigated. Ternary platinum oxides were synthesized at high pressure (40 kUobars) and temperature (to 1600°C). Properties of the systems were studied by x-ray, thermal analysis, and infrared methods. Complete miscibility is observed in most PtO2-rutile-type oxide systems, but no miscibility or compound formation is found with fluorite dioxides. Lead dioxide reacts with Pt02 to form cubic Pb2Pt207. Several corundum-type sesquioxides exhibit measurable solubility in PtOz. Two series of compounds are formed with metal monoxides M2PtOh (where M is Mg, Zn, Cd) and MPt306 (where M is Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Hg). [Pg.39]

Among rare earth oxides, sesquioxides show high activity for base-catalyzed reactions. The activities are comparable to those of alkaline earth oxides. The rare earth oxides which are stable at higher oxidation states of metal cations such as Ce02, Tb40 , and PreOn show weakly basic properties. [Pg.46]
