Atmospheric emissions of sulphur dioxide are either measured or estimated at their source and are thus calculated on a provincial or state basis for both Canada and the United States (Figure 2). While much research and debate continues, computer-based simulation models can use this emission information to provide reasonable estimates of how sulphur dioxide and sulphate (the final oxidized form of sulphur dioxide) are transported, transformed, and deposited via atmospheric air masses to selected regions. Such "source-receptor" models are of varying complexity but all are evaluated on their ability to reproduce the measured pattern of sulphate deposition over a network of acid rain monitoring stations across United States and Canada. In a joint effort of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Canadian Atmospheric Environment Service, eleven linear-chemistry atmospheric models of sulphur deposition were evaluated using data from 1980. It was found that on an annual basis, all but three models were able to simulate the observed deposition patterns within the uncertainty limits of the observations (22). [Pg.45]

The diversity of products, organizations, culture, and social and political frameworks focusing on a product-specific absolute quantity seemed to make it virtually impossible to achieve a uniform and globally accepted definition of Quality. However, in the 1970s, the term Quality was normed for the first time as a term in the concept of quality management (European Organization for Quality Control 1972). In the 80s the ISO 9000-Standard was established and defined quality based on former definitions like the compliance of requirements to test nominal and actual conditions of a product. After revisions the norm ISO 9000 2000 came up with a definition, which was adopted by the CIRP Dictionary of Production Engineering 2004, that defined quality as the totality of properties and characteristics of an entity that bear on its ability to satisfy stated and implied needs. The present definition set by the ISO 9000 2005 states that quality represents the level in which a set of inherent product characteristics meets the customers demands. This definition includes, but is not limited to, physical products or immaterial services and addresses processes and systems as well (Eig. 1). [Pg.1018]

Ambassador David Abshire, the US Permanent representative to NATO, told the Senate Armed Services Committee on 10 April 1986 that the Alliance s approved strategy states that NATO should rely principally on its conventional and nuclear forces for deterrence. It also states that as an additional deterrent, NATO should possess the ability to deploy lethal chemical agents on a limited scale in retaliation . ... [Pg.211]

A limited number of stodies have been conducted on the internal repair of steel pipelines using composite material systems. As a consequence, only a few industries have used composite technologies for internal repair. In their report, Bruce et al. (2006) indicated that internal repair would have the best economics for underwater repair locations as it reduces out-of-service time and does not require divers and habitats. Such economics arise because the majority of the gas transmission line companies in the United States consider the ability of the pipeline to remain in service during internal repair to be very important. Moreover, they would considCT internal repair, even if the pipeline needs to be out of service (no flow), only if the pipeline remains pressurised and the line can still be inspected by a pipe inspection gauge after repair. However, these companies have indicated that they would consider performing a repair from inside the pipe once a proven and accepted internal repair system becomes available. Thus, the selection of the most appropriate technique of renovation, particularly on the internal repair of high-pressure and deep water pipeline applications, is a critical and ongoing issue. [Pg.268]
