Serotonin receptor-active agents

Antipsychotics (conventional agents have nonspecific dopamine receptor antagonsim atypical agents also have serotonin antagonist activity), ecopipam, GBR-12909 and other partial dopamine agonists (may be functional antagonists)... 

In earlier proposals (Anderson et al. 1978), based on this stereoselectivity for the S enantiomer of MDMA, it was suggested that, rather than having a direct effect at serotonin receptors, perhaps MDMA was a neurotransmitterreleasing agent, acting in a fashion similar to amphetamine, for which the S enantiomer is also more active than the R enantiomer. Nausea that accompanies the administration of cancer chemotherapy agents was resistant to drug intervention until the introduction of the serotonin receptor antagonist odansetron (see Chapter 13). Mescaline acts similarly to other psychedelic agents. It activates the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor with a high affinity as a partial agonist. This receptor activation causes the release of glutamate in the prefrontal cortex and optic nerve correlated with cognitive and perceptual distortions. 

Mlrtazapine. The tetracyclic mirtazapine (Remenin) is another example of an or-antagonist that shows selectivity for 02 receptors versus serotonin receptors and at histamine H receptors.
