Tyrosine is a precursor of the hormones thyroxine (tetraiodothyronine) and epinephrine and of melanin, a complex polymeric pigment. The neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) and the nicotinamide ring of NAD + are synthesized from tryptophan.
