Graphites (natural or synthetic) are black semireinforcing fillers used almost exclusively in rotary shaft seal applications where surface lubricity and abrasion resistance must be enhanced (see Carbon, natural graphite). 

Mineral fillers are used for light-colored compounds. Talc has a small particle size and is a semireinforcing filler. It reduces air permeabihty and has htde effect on cure systems. Calcined clay is used for halobutyl stoppers in pharmaceutical appHcations. Nonreinforcing fillers, such as calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide, have large particle sizes and are added to reduce cost and viscosity. Hydrated siUcas give dry, stiff compounds, and their acidity reduces cure rate hence, their content should be minimized. 

A type of carbon black produced by burning natural gas or oil in a large furnace with a supply of air much lower than that required for complete combustion. The main types are super abrasion (SAF), intermediate super abrasion (TSAF), high abrasion (HAF), fast extrusion (FEF), general purpose (GPF), conductive (CF) and semireinforcing (SRF).

Most furnace black reactors are arranged horizontally. They can be up to 18 m long with an outer diameter of up to 2 m. Some vertical reactors are used especially for the manufacture of certain semireinforcing blacks [4.12] (Fig. 51). For further reactors, see [4.13].

Currently, only a few plants still produce rather coarse blacks (mean particle diameter 100 nm) with special properties. They are used as nonreinforcing or semireinforcing blacks in rubber goods and as tinting black with a low pigment separation tendency. 

This white semireinforcing filler is used in flame resistant compounds and sometimes as a colouring agent. 

As is true for most rubbers, the physical properties of cured polysulfide polymers are poor unless reinforcing fillers are used. The semireinforcing blacks are best, and are the main fillers usually employed. Zinc sulfide, titanium dioxide, calcium carbo nate, and lithopone all are useful for reinforcing white or light stocks. In general, the same fillers are used in polysulfide rubbers aa in the other ssnathetic rubbers.
