The behavioral responses of males of H. virescens and H. subflexa to semiochemicals have been of considerable interest to us for reasons already mentioned. Semiochemicals are considered to include all chemicals emitted by plants, animals, and other organisms, and also their synthetic analogs, that induce a behavioral or physiological response in the receptor species [39]. A semiochemical emitted by an individual of one species that affects individuals of different species is defined as an allelochemical. A semiochemical emitted by one species that affects individuals of the same species is defined as a pheromone.
