Self-efficacy. Client mastery that shows both competence and confidence to succeed at reaching a goal or completing a task successfully. 

For whatever reason, the client may not successfully negotiate the high-risk situation in a way that averts the risk. Unsuccessful coping may cause two unfortunate events to occur. The first is a reduction in her or his self-efficacy to successfully cope with the situation without drug use. As you may remember, self-efficacy involves the sense of mastery of a situation that results from competence and confidence. Client competence and confidence can take a beating when a high-risk situation is not handled effectively.

In addition, the Self-Test at the conclusion of each chapter is designed to test the student s mastery of the material. Soon after starting Chapter 1 you will note that I have adopted a semiprogrammed approach. That is, there are frequent example problems (with solutions) to test your mastery of the topic at hand. To get the most from your reading, try to work each problem as you encounter it. They often contain important additional information about the material just covered. Then, at the end of each chapter there is a chapter summary and several review problems to see if you have mastered the concepts in that chapter. There are also two self-tests (after Chapters 7 and 13) that will help you assess your overall mastery of the subject. The answers to these review and self-test problems appear in Appendix 1. 

Study Guide, by Paul B. Kelter of the University of Illinois, is a self-study aid for students containing alternative strategies for solving problems, supplemental explanations for the most difficult material, and self-tests. There are approximately 400 worked examples and 800 practice problems (with answers) designed to give students mastery and confidence. 

Each chapter concludes with a list of concepts and skills for review by our students. Included in this list are cross-references to the section in which the topic was covered and to problems that help test mastery of the particular skill involved. This feature is helpful for self-testing and review of material. 

Growth and progress in the language arts are also measured through the eventual mastery of self-correcting methods. The more experimenting and practice your learner has, the better he or she will coordinate these skills into a method that works best ... 

Note These problems demonstrate a range of possibilities for literary response and self-expression. Adapt them to your learner s level of mastery. As always, these prompts may be read/answered/dis-cussed aloud.
