The thermoset acrylics (20) of major importance in the coating industry, in recent years, have been developed primarily by Canadian Industry Ltd. and by Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. in this country (4). Raw materials are acrylamide, acrylic acid, acrylates, and styrene. Cross-linking agents are amino and epoxy resins. The materials are also self-cross-linking. The binder, therefore, must have the following properties good adhesion to fibre and pigment in the dry state, and in water and solvent a soft, non-tacky handle elasticity lightfastness, clarity and no colour compatibility with, and stability towards, other ingredients in the mix. Some styrene butadiene copolymer rubbers and vinyl latices are used successfully but the most suited are the acrylics. They used polymeric Janus particles prepared from mixed-shell micelles (MSMs) that self-assembled into tubular superstructures and nanosheets.
