Recently, it has been found that the outcome of some cycloadditions can be altered remarkably when performed inside the cavity of cyclodextrins (288), self-assembled molecular capsules (289), or coordination cages (290). This fact intrigued us greatly and stimulated our interest in the Diels-Alder reactivity of the calixarene-like [M2(L19)(L )]+ complexes bearing unsaturated carboxylate coligands L (215). 

The developed sensor was used for ultrathin-film measurement. The reflection spectrum was shifted during the deposition of thin films (e.g., self-assembly of polyelectrolyte layers) onto the sensor end. The reflection between the thin film and the fiber endface was neglected because of their similar refractive indices. As the film increased its thickness, the length of the fiber cavity changed. Using information obtained from X-ray crystallography, we have described the structure of a chiral, spherical molecular assembly held together by 60 hydrogen bonds. [10] The host, which conforms to the structure of a snub cube, self-assembles in apolar media and encapsulates guest species within a cavity that possesses an internal volume of approximately 1.4 nm3. 

To hnish this section and chapter we will briefly discuss the synthetic routes pursued in order to obtain cyclothiophenes, fully a-conjugated macrocyclic oligothiophenes, i.e., joining boths ends of linear a-thiophenes (Kromer et al., 2000). One advantage of these macromolecules is that the mean diameter of the cavity can be tuned by selecting the initial building blocks. In Section 4.2 we will explore how such molecules, in particular cyclotrimeric terthiophenediacetylene, self-assemble on a surface.
