A multiphasic system for a chemical reaction can be constituted by any combination of gaseous, liquid, and solid phases. If a catalyst is present, it can be homogeneous or heterogeneous, thereby adding further phases—and degrees of freedom—to the system. The cracking of the BMO gave a poor result mainly due to the low H/C-ratio (see Table III). Hemler and Wilcox (29,30) catalytically cracked coal liquids, hydroprocessed at different severities, and found that the conversion increased and the selectivity improved with increasing severity of hydroprocessing.
