In the case of a layered model of the earth, one can use a simple technique of geometrical seismics, which is based on studying the geometry of rays of seismic wave propagation. In more complicated geological structures, comprehensive imaging and inversion methods must be used to analyze seismic data. In order to develop these methods, one should study carefully the physics of seismic waves. [Pg.14]

Acoustic and elastic properties are directly concerned with seismic wave propagation in marine sediments. They encompass P- and S-wave velocity and attenuation and elastic moduli of the sediment frame and wet sediment. The most important parameter which controls size and resolution of sedimentary structures by seismic studies is the frequency content of the source signal. If the dominant frequency and bandwidth are high, fine-scale structures associated with pore space and grain size distribution affect the elastic wave propagation. This is subject of ultrasonic transmission measurements on sediment cores (Sects. 2.4 and 2.5). At lower frequencies larger scale features like interfaces with different physical properties above and below and bed-forms like mud waves, erosion zones and ehatmel levee systems are the dominant structures imaged... [Pg.42]

Numerical simulation of seismic wave propagation along a slender rods done by Tang Chun-an (Tang, 2009) displays that, the reflection wave at the slope surface will form the tensile stress wave, which will lead to tensional deformation at the part of slope, even projectile. It can be used for the... [Pg.547]

Hyperbolic equations, like parabolic ones, are also equations of evolution. Although steady flows in aerodynamics, for example, can be both elliptic and hyperbolic (representing, respectively, subsonic and supersonic flow), the latter are not as often found in petroleum reservoir simulation except for certain immiscible two-phase flows dominated by inertia. They describe seismic wave propagation in the earth, but this subject, being entirely different, is not discussed here. These equation classifications are mathematical ones that apply to the equation only. Seismic waves and well test transients excited by periodic disturbances, such as thumpers and oscillating pistons, which are respectively hyperbolic and parabolic in the time domain, satisfy elliptic equations when the governing equations are expressed in the frequeney domain. [Pg.8]

The propagation and attenuation of a seismic wave is an important issue in earthquake engineering. Abdelkhalek et al. (2012) adopted a GPU to solve the problem of seismic wave propagation. Considering both the 2D and 3D cases, this group used the GPU Tesla S1070 to perform an analysis of a seismic wave based on a finite... [Pg.1122]

This method uses data from acceleration sensors to detect changes in structural stiffness based on the analysis of travel times of seismic waves propagating through the structure (Todorovska and Trifunac 2007, 2010). The physical basis for this approach is based on the one-dimensional shear-wave propagation velocity ... [Pg.1937]
