Security career

In one way, I ve always wondered if, in terms of job security, I should have gone to medical school. Like my father wanted me to. You can t help but think it would have been much easier to have been an M.D.. .. And not worry about tenure. I didn t get tenure at In a sense, I sort of wonder if life would have been easier if I had gotten an M.D. In the end, I think that I would not have had as interesting a career, if I had simply practiced medicine. The thing that I love about research is that there is always a new challenge. And, it s always exciting. 

Careers today are less secure. The waves of managerial redundancies in recent years mean that the safe corporate career is a thing of the past. In these stormy times anchor is perhaps no longer an appropriate metaphor. Or if it is, then we need perhaps to weigh the appropriateness of our current anchors. 

As a result of all these changes, a long life has become something to look forward to rather than dread. Many of today s retirees are younger, healthier, and more financially secure than their predecessors. Their children are reared, their careers are complete, and they are ready to enjoy the fruits of their labors. With careful planning, they can make these years the best years of their lives. 

The travel career ladder approach was developed by Pearce (1988, 1991b, 1993b), Pearce and Caltabiano (1983) and Moscardo and Pearce (1986a) and was based in part on Maslow s (1970) needs-hierarchy theory of motivation. The first thing to note is that the age structure of this group in August 1970 was strikingly concentrated, with 70 percent between the ages of forty and fifty-five. Presumably, most had reached a stage of their careers where they enjoyed a measure of reputational authority and job security. All those who worked in academia had tenure, and all but one was full professor two were department chairs. All but two of those employed in government or private laboratories occupied administrative as well as research positions, for example, as laboratory director, branch chief, or division head. 

In the 1920s, Homer abandoned this part of her career, devoting her life instead to securing the development of oil and potash and other mineral resources in Palestine. Then, during the Second World War, she was involved in the search for oil in Palestine. Homer died on 1 January 1953. 

Scientists can work with industry either from the secure confines of academia or by joining industry. Since a large number of research students are at least tempted toward a career in Pharma or Biotech, it is important for scientists— the students and their mentors— to understand the differences. From such understanding come insights into successful collaboration on drug discovery.
