Secondary losses

The adiabatic head that is actually available at the rotor discharge is equal to the theoretical head minus the head losses from the shock in the rotor, the incidence loss, the blade loadings and profile losses, the clearance between the rotor and the shroud, and the secondary losses encountered in the flow passage... 

Secondary loss. This loss is caused by the movement of the boundary layers in a direction different from the main stream. This loss is small in a well-designed machine and is usually less than 1 %.

Here we suggest that in dilute polymer solutions there very probably exists a high frequency dispersion region corresponding to the DTO model, and examine one possible case, the secondary loss observed in poly (propylene) oxide. 

Dynamic mechanical response spectra of elastin145 (insoluble protein of vessels and ligaments), poly(ethylene terephthalate)141 and polycarbonate based on Bisphenol A (4,4 -dihydroxydiphenylmethane)141 show that incorporated water brings about enlargement of the existing secondary loss peak and its displacement toward lower temperatures. In conformity with the latter result, the activation energy of the relaxation process of elastin decreases. So far, no detailed data on this type of relaxation have been collected so that the copartidpation of water in the molecular motion cannot be specified more accurately. 

Sodium removal is the next important step—by dietary salt restriction or a diuretic—especially if edema is present. In mild failure, it is reasonable to start with a thiazide diuretic, switching to more powerful agents as required. Sodium loss causes secondary loss of potassium, which is particularly hazardous if the patient is to be given digitalis. Hypokalemia can be treated with potassium supplementation or through the addition of a potassium-sparing diuretic such as spironolactone. As noted above, spironolactone should probably be considered in all patients with moderate or severe heart failure since it appears to reduce both morbidity and mortality.

The PS-2100/PMMA thermal data of Figure 3 also show two glass-transition temperatures for the 25% blend, indicating incompatibility. The dynamic mechanical results for blends of PS-600 in PMMA are consistent with the thermal and optical results, as Figure 4 shows. The PMMA secondary loss shoulder is diminished somewhat as the concentration of PS-600 is increased, in a manner similar to that observed in other polymer-diluent systems in which the diluent is monomeric (15) until phase separation occurs. Thereafter, the phase-separated PS-600 shows up as a characteristically narrow peak at about — 10°C.
