Other conditions in which ephedra is contraindicated are anxiety disorders, angle-closure glaucoma, prostate adenoma with residual urine volume, pheochromocytoma, and thyrotoxicosis (Gruenwald et al. 1998). Known medications that may interact adversely with ephedrine include heart glycosides, halothane, guanethidine, MAO inhibitors, secale alkaloids, and oxytocin. 

Ephedra has negative interactions with cardiac heart glycosides, halothene, guanethidine, MAO inhibitors, and secale alkaloid derivatives or oxytocin.

C Secale alkaloids in solution and exposure to light undergo easy epimerization and also form lumi-compounds. Secale extracts such as sample 2 then show artefacts, such as isolysergic acid derivatives, lumi- and aci-compounds. seen as additional, usually weaker zones with higher R. values. 

In the course of this time, a large number of traditional remedies which appeared to be active have been analyzed and their essential components isolated and identified many of these, such as atropine, digitalis, ephed e, quinine and the secale alkaloids, have since been incorporated into orthodox medicine, whilst others have served as the starting point for the synthesis of new and better compoimds. Despite these developments, the use of entirely traditional herbal remedies, largely outside the practice of medicine, has continued. To a large extent these remedies have been commercialized and are currently sold for purposes of self-medication to a much -more limited extent, at least in western countries, a group of professional herbal practitioners has survived, treating patients exclusively or in part wifii remedies of this type.

B After treatment with van URK reagent, the Secale extract (1) generates three blue zones of the principal alkaloids (T1-T3) in the R, range 0.05-0.4. 

Triticale is a hybrid of wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale) that was first bred in labs during the late nineteenth century. When wheat and rye are crossed, wheat is used as the female parent and rye as the male parent (pollen donor). The resulting hybrid is sterile and has to be treated with the alkaloid chemical colchicine to make it fertile so that it can reproduce. Different ploidy levels have been created (i.e., different numbers of chromosomes), but hexaploid triticale has been the most successful.
