Whatever methods are employed to link assessment end points with measures of effect, it is important to apply the methods in a manner consistent with sound ecological and toxicological principles. For example, it is inappropriate to use structure-activity relationships to predict toxicity from chemical structure unless the chemical under consideration has a similar mode of toxic action to the reference chemicals. Similarly extrapolations from upland avian species to waterfowl may be more credible if factors such as differences in food preferences, physiology, and seasonal behavior (e.g., mating and migration habits) are considered. [Pg.511]

Yet another method for estimating the flux of ozone into the troposphere is based on a model for the seasonal behavior of ozone first proposed by Junge (1962). The model assumes that the flux of ozone across the tropopause is proportional to total ozone and that the spring maximum of... [Pg.212]

This simple condition can be used to explain both the the seasonal behavior and the horizontal scale of Rossby waves formd in the stratosphere. The first inequality on (41) implies that quasi-stationary (c —y 0) waves will not be found in the summer stratosphere. This prediction is borne out by observations, as shown inFig. 9. In the stratosphere, where i/ < 0 in smnmer, quasistationary waves are absent in fact, the summertime stratospheric circulation essentially follows latitude circles, as seen earlier in connection with Fig. 7. [Pg.215]

It is mainly in cold behavior that the specifications differ between bome-heating oil and diesel fuel. In winter diesel fuel must have cloud points of -5 to -8°C, CFPPs from -15 to -18°C and pour points from -18 to 21°C according to whether the type of product is conventional or for severe cold. For home-heating oil the specifications are the same for all seasons. The required values are -l-2°C, -4°C and -9°C, which do not present particular problems in refining. [Pg.233]
