It is not always possible to harvest trees year-round. In eastern and central Canada, much of the forested land has shallow, wet soils. The majority of harvesting is therefore done in winter when the ground is frozen. Harvest in other areas may also be seasonal. [Pg.255]

In seasonal snow/ice storages frozen water is stored from winter to summer, when the cold is utilized. The snow/ice can be stored indoor, on ground, in open ponds/pits and under ground, Figure 200. [Pg.349]

In seasonal snow/ice storages frozen water, snow or ice, is stored from winter to summer, when the cold is extracted. The basic idea is that a cold carrier (water or air) is cooled by the snow, to utilize the large latent heat of fusion, and then delivers the cold. The cold carrier is either circulated between the load and the snow or rejected after it has been used for cooling. [Pg.363]

Good insulation for the poultry house is not only important to prevent frozen water in the cold season, but also to keep temperatures down on hot days in summer. High temperatures reduce the well-being of the hens and reduce egg shell quality, resulting in more broken eggs (Yahav et al., 2000). [Pg.130]

Several objective methods are available to determine the freshness of shrimp however, many require a) raw products for analysis, b) complex chemistry and equipment for testing, or c) highly trained technicians. Additionally, some of these methods require extensive analysis time making results meaningless if product has already spoiled or has been released to consumers. Results for the impedance method discussed in the present paper demonstrate that spoilage of raw or thermally processed shrimp can be detect in 30 min with easy sample preparation. The limitations of this method revolve around the requirement for authentic fresh frozen standards as a basis for comparison. Further research is necessary to define the effect of seasonal and geographical variations, and species and size difference. The sum of these factors will likely affect the reproducibility of this method. [Pg.260]

Other frozen dairy products. Although milk may become frozen inadvertently, freezing is not a common commercial practice. However, concentrated or unconcentrated milks are sometimes frozen commercially, e.g. to supply remote locations (as an alternative to dried or UHT milk), to store sheep s or goats milk, production of which is seasonal, or human milk for infant feeding in emergencies (milk banks). [Pg.50]

The inverse relationship between limonin content and taste preference was confirmed in another study (41) using a stepwise multiple regression analysis of data from 60 samples of commercial frozen-concentrated orange juice (FCOJ) packed during two seasons. This and a latter report (42) concluded that limonin content was highly correlated with the flavor quality of the juice. [Pg.79]

In the seasonal Balsfjord study, subsamples for transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) analysis (n = 5) were taken from the formaldehyde preserved cylinder (5-100 ml). TEP was gently filtered onto 0.4 pm membrane filters and stained with Alcian blue (Sigma A5268) according to Passow and Alldredge (1995). The samples were stored frozen, dissolved in 80% H2S04 and measured spectrophotometrically at 787 nm. The amount of TEP is expressed as gum xanthan equivalents (mg gum xanthan equiv. m 2 cl ) based on calibration with gum xanthan (Sigma 1253). [Pg.220]

My store is committed to the same ideals, but we also have to serve our customers. Therefore we have frozen organic fruits that are technically out of season but which the customers want to have available. The same is true of canned soups and fruits and other products. [Pg.17]

A major weakness of a short-term (24 hour survey) is that it may depend upon the day of the week, when the survey was conducted. For example, in some European countries the diet on a Friday would consist of more fish than any other day and consequently this would impact on the packaging and the potential migrants present. Another issue is the season of the year and when the consumption surveys were conducted. Seasonal foods, particularly in Southern Europe, may have very large differences in consumption and out of season only the preserved or frozen seasonal foods may be consumed in contrast to the fresh ones, which may have been consumed in season. This will impact the packaging of the foodstuff significantly. [Pg.139]

What happens in snow, in fact, if the snow is falling, is that there will be in snow the different salts, mainly ammonium sulphate salts — and where there are temperature changes, of course there will be in the system a freezing point depression, so finally during the season everything of these particles will be collected just over the soil, down there, and now when the melting period comes, you have the shock, and the shock, especially when the snow is lying on a frozen lake, can kill all the fish population in a few days. [Pg.535]
