A somewhat similar but simpler design uses a horizontal screw section for leaching and a secona screw in an inclined sec tion for washing, draining, and discharging the extrac ted solids. [Pg.1676]

Single-screw and double-screw extruders are normally used for polymer melts to accomplish the deaeration or devolatilization of residual volatiles. While the minimum residence time is significant for dispersive mixing, the residence time distribution in the extruder influences distributive mixing as a measure for longitudinal mixing performance [20]. The average residence time depends only on screw pitch and screw speed in partially-filled screw sections, and only on throughput in fully-filled screw sections. [Pg.74]

As explained, the ideal situation for a model that would enable a purely mathematical screw design would be a straight path to the right, as in Fig. 6.1. In fact, however, trials are usually needed in practice. If for instance, another type of product is to be run on an existing production machine, this can be tried out experimentally on a large scale. If the trial is successful, everyone will be happy but if not, this kind of trial can be very expensive. Modeling may not be able to simulate the whole process but it is useful preparation for production trials. It can serve to define certain details or screw sections in order to prevent the worst outcome. [Pg.106]

Viewed together, the results of Figs. 6.3 and 6.4 can be summarized as follows A whole screw can be modeled using 0- and 1-dimensional models, but to no great depth. The nozzle (5) and the back-feeding kneading block (3) are obstacles to flow that generate a drop in pressure. The screw sections upstream of this must build up the pressure needed to overrun the obstacle. The back-feeding kneading block (3) ensures that at least a part of the kneading zone is wholly filled, which promotes the mixing effect. [Pg.122]

The dimensionless power is ideally formed using the same reference variables as for the pressure number. It can be derived that the power input is proportional to the viscosity of the medium and to the screw section under consideration, as well as to the square of the rotational speed and to the square of the diameter.
